In 1969, inaugural season for the Penguins, the logo featured a hefty-looking skating penguin wearing a scarf, on a yellow triangle. The yellow triangle is a reference to the Golden Triangle in the city of Pittsburgh. In the second season, a refined version of the logo appeared on the uniforms. The designers of logo removed the scarf and gave the penguin a "meaner" look.

This version of logo would remain unchanged until the 1992-1993 season, when the team unveiled a new logo. It featured a modern-looking "flying penguin". This version of logo survived in various forms for 15 years, but it was never as widely accepted as the "skating penguin" logo.

After Mario Lemieux purchased the team from bankruptcy court in 1999, the franchise announced plans to bring back the logo from the early days of the Penguins. This occurred for the 2000-2001 season. The following season, the logo became the primary logo, and the "flying penguin" logo was relegated to secondary status. In 2007, the »flying penguin« was quietly retired.
